RUSSH September 09

I was over the moon to get my Russh early this month - LOVING the subscription I got for my birthday (thanks girls!!) as it usually hits news-stands way later in New Zealand than in Aus.

The issue is a total killer and the cover alone nocks you for six. Its the 30th issue and celebrating 5 years of Russh - I can't believe it's been that long. I have been obsessed since it first came out. I read every issue about ten times and colour code everything with post-its; pink for things to scan, green for the things to look up more about later. Every issue is devoured.

Enjoy..

"Sara Emilia... In The Sun"
Love the warmth and sensuality of these. Tousled hair, summer tan - all bathed in a perfectly golden light.

Fashion Editor: Natalie Shukur

Fashion News
More Emma Cook for Topshop teasers!! I neeeeed every pair I have seen so far.

"Ali To The Max"
This editorial positively drips with strength, sex, athleticism and physicality.
The hyper-saturated colours of the background and makeup combined with the multitude of sexily futuristic textured white pieces are absolutely killer.

Fashion Editor: Stevie Dance

"Boys To Men"
The divine Ash Stymest was interviewed about the male modeling industry - you can read about it on Isaac Likes as well as Isaac's thoughts.

Photographer: Dounia Benjelloul

"Badlands"
In 1959 she watched while he self destructed..
I adore this editorial as well. Its a homage to Terence Malick's film Badlands - one of my favorite directors of all time, his Thin Red Line and The New World are in my top ten and are guaranteed to take your breath away and move you.

This editorial captures innocence, love, nostalgia and small towns all bathed in golden light - whilst also an ominous sense of danger.

I love this shot of a tattoo on tanned skin through ripped denim.
This spread has also made me want loafers even more - and to pair them with socks asap.
Also love that the now ubiquitous and awesome Louis Vuitton bunny ears make an appearance.
I will never tire of the simplicity, earthiness and many underlying references of perfectly beaten up denim and white tees. Iconically American, yet universally relatable. Classically manly yet accessible to females as well.
And how intense is that brooding shot on the left? The colours, contrast, everything capture the danger and appeal of his character.
She however glows with innocence, naivety, warmth, femininity. Her peaches and cream complexion is refreshing - and particularly radiates in that stunning Zimmerman dress.

Runway in real life: side swept hair

Check out the piece I have just written for Beauty Bible on the deliciously sexy and badass side-swept hair that's been all over the runways and magazine pages lately.

RUSSH July 09

Hi all - maaaajor apologies for the extreme belatedness of this post! Have had a crazy buy past few weeks with pre and actual birthday and uni stuff. But have finally got my shit together! And apologies in advance for possible dwindling in posting this weekend - am working friday night and literally aaall saturday and sunday. Oh the joys of retail.

Great issue of Russh, as always. Oh and did I mention some of my friends gave me a Russh subscription for my 21st? Awesome!!!

"What's In Your Bag? Fashion Week Essentials"
I loved this - there's something about the insides of peoples bags that is so intimate and unique. You really see what sort of person they are (mess, neat etc) and what is important enough to them to be carted around every day. And I still ADORE that Prada bag!
Left to right: Natalie Shukur (Editor), Stevie Dance (Fashion Director), Christine Thornton (Art Director)

"Richard Prince"
Prince has been a longtime favorite artist of mine - would kill to get my hands on some prints of his. The "Girlfriend" series has always been a fave - and I loved the "Nurses" series and the collaboration with Louis Vuitton.
From the "Girlfriends" series & from the "Nurses" series

"The Heart Is A Lonely Hunter"
I love the austerity modesty of this - so evocative of puritans and a time long past. Yet it never ever verges on looking "costumey" as some others in this vein have.
This pop of colour in the middle of the spread nocks yo for six - and really emphasizes the starkness of the black and white. And I'm so digging that hat - makes me want to buy another version of the wide brimmed fedora I picked up but in black.
Isn't it awesome? And the layered fringing on that bodysuit? To die for. I would probably by twirling non stop if I had this.
The movement of the shot on the left is particularly beautiful - conveys a sense of freedom and wide open spaces. Beautiful billowing shapes from the cape and skirt.

Fashion Editor: Stevie Dance

"Sorry, No One's Home"
This is my favorite of the whole issue - the sense of nostalgia and innocence are impeccable. As is the small town ennui. The dreamlike state is evocative of The Virgin Suicides and In My Fathers Den.

I definitely need to big up more pieces in blush and pink tones - and as my hair is shorter now I feel I can wear them and look less overtly girly. Also wanting some of the Lonely Hearts lingerie (featured on the right) than I was already!

This last shot in particular is stunning - vulnerable, yearning, lonely, innocent yet womanly.

Sequins and Fur

I love deliciously glam editorials - that make you want to throw on every sequin, jewel and fur you can find and go out out out. Best editorial genre - supremely ruled by Russh and French Vogue. This spread by Vogue Russia kicks some bejeweled ass too though - I'm definitely feeling a beyond awesome Jerry Hall vibe.

Tied In Knots

I still can't stop wearing topknots. They are just the perfect solution to a bad hair day - totally rectifies when our hairs messy, knotty, disagreeable or dirty (with the help of some baby powder - perk of being blonde!). I love them when they are a bit messy and slept in, they convey a gorgeous, appealing and unpretensious nonchalance and realism. Childlike and innocent yet also a suggest a bit of trouble too.

They are in nearly every issue of Russh - always executed to perfection. Erin Wasson is undoubtably the queen of the knot - she even wore a big side angled one to the Met's Costume Institute Gala this year. I also love the cute buns done by Stephen Marr for Juliette Hogan's beautiful summer lookbook.

Sneak Peek: Russh July/August Cover

Psych!!!!!! Russh's website has the new cover on it.. And their Twitter has a sneak peek of some of the pages at the printers. God I can not wait - counting down as of now. Though will have to wait the usual three decades after it comes out in Australia for our copies to cross the Tasman. So worth it. But I think my newsagent hates me because I always nag them about when it's due.

Dress Up

So I seriously need some fun going out dresses.. Had a massive outfit meltdown while getting dressed on saturday night; tears, insecurity, the works - classic Dumb Girl moment. Something must be done.

I really want something with sleeves - as my total lack of circulation means I feel the cold terribly. I want sparkles, metallic, lace, details and monochrome.

Black & White

So I only just realised that (one of) the 21st I'm going to tomorrow night is black and white themed. This so should not throw me - I mean who can mess up a black and white outfit? I wear them a lot in summer - loose black tanks white white skinnies or cutoffs, simple, casual - and a bit tomboy. But being winter I pile on a million pieces of clothing when I go out - and I find if I limit them to black and white I end up thinking I look like a waiter/tuxedo/penguin/backstreetboy

Another prob - have zero black or white dresses that are appropriate for someone's 21st (too short, tight or casual) and I just feel way to rude wearing pants. Will have to have an intense wardrobe raid. Old faithful Karen Walker white lace top good def be a go! It's a lifesaver - and so so pretty, which always helps.

Hair Ramble #2

God I have been tearing my hair out all day trying to upload the images for this post. Finally figured it was the colour profiles from Photoshop causing drrrama. And of course technical issues are great distractions from uni work.

So speaking of hair, I had a ramble the other day about the half (or more? maybe?) of me that is dying to lop of my hair into a scruffy bob. The rest of my is desperate for it to grow grow grow. Do I keep growing it? Am tempted to dye it darkblonde/lightbrown - am pretty much obsessed with this hair colour. Think young Brooke Shields circa Blue Lagoon and those Calvin Klein ads.

But am I ready to not be blonde? Have been for my WHOLE life. There is something heavenly about long, messy blonde locks. Typical of the iconic Chloe girls (as well as Chloe Sevigny).
Or should I maintain what I have at the moment? Midlength, growing out, wavy/disheveled - but occasionally bordering on scarecrow when I am v lazy.
Wow this post has been the ultimate in distraction. And sleep calls, 5 hours before wakeup and deadlines tomorrow. But only two sleeps until my five week mid semester break!! Hallelujah!

RUSSH May 09

Got, read (twice so far) and scanned the new issue of Russh in the space of two days! Infinitely better than my usual drawn-out magazine habits. Words can't actually describe how much I love this magazine, so I won't even try. The new issue is a stunner - I fell in love with the cover the minute I saw it online about a month ago. However those of us stranded in New Zealand have to wait nearly a whole month after our Australian counterparts to get our hands on it. So worth it thought.

"Rockette"
This editorial is what I'd been waiting for... Breathtaking. The colours are gorgeous - the soft brown background, gentle lighting and her hair and skin colour are all so gorgeous. The featured pieces are to die for as well - soft tailoring, luxe metal details (zips! Lots!). That Christopher Kane scalloped dress is out-of-this-world beautiful and ethereal. Im still desperately coveting a chainmail-esque piece.. God knows where I'll pick something like that up. And don't think DIY is a viable option in this case.
The Rodarte looks gorgeous, as always. And I totally die for that hair. Constance Jablonski is a stunner.

"Judy Is A Punk"
Shanay Hall is def one of my fave Aussie models -  and a frequent star of Russh. She fits their aesthetic so well. As soon as i saw the creamy pink jacket on the left I knew it was an Ellery - and was right. Bonus point for me.

"Mix And Match"
God I wish my dressing table looked exactly like this... Seriously. Life would be tres complete! Unfortunately mines a hot mess of Liberty boxes and Bunnykins (yup.. I know.. Still use it even though I got it when I was two) bowls full of jewelry and makeup. And blonde hair everywhere - not very editorial worthy.
"Undercover Lover"
I am a total jacket/coat fiend... A few years ago I was strictly cardie girl, but my outerwear obsession started insidiously and has now undoubtably taken over. I love all kinds - blazer, leather, denim, army, pea etc etc. Love these three featured. The army jacket is such a classic - reminds me of the one I am wearing literally right now (just got home from work). The center one is a Karen Walker stunner - still in total love with her double breasted jackets from this winter.

"Joi de Vivre"
