Anticipating: Karen Walker

You all know I'm a total Karen Walker groupie, so understandably I am dying with excitement to see what she pulls out of the bag at New York Fashion Week.

Lucky for us, our boy Isaac from Isaac Likes is over in New York and went to visit Karen. His post is a must read! He has some tantalising hints of what the collection is like:
- "plenty of masculine blazers and pants (including beige pleated), lots of prints and some straw hats"
- "Gold buttons on blazers feature a peace sign"
- " 'It's a nautical resort, holiday kinda feel.... There are lots of tanks and navy blazers and stripy breton tee shirts and just that really great 60s seaside resort feel which I've always loved.' - Karen Walker "
- Chukka boots

Oh man, sounds too good. Im dying!

And I thought I'd include some of my favorite looks from her recent collections. Can't wait to see the upcoming show!

Absolute Man

It doesn't get much better than Ash Stymest in Balmain Homme. He not only looks like ideal male here, I also want all the pieces for myself. Maybe we could share? Dreamy.

I saw these over on Isaac Likes (where there's some interesting commentary going on) and they made my afternoon - thanks Isaac!

Purrrfect Adidas

Wanting me some Jeremy Scott for Adidas!! I'm a total sucker for anything retro-athletic and logo-ed. And how sick is that leopard hoodie?! It's got a cat head! Seriously! Neeeed.

Ps: anyone know if we get this in lil old NZ?? x

Update: I totally didn't recognise her (probably because I was transfixed with the hood), but Isaac from Isaac Likes spotted that the model is NZ's own Stella Maxwell!

Isaac Likes RAFW

Isaac Hindin Miller from Isaac Likes has super kindly answered a few questions for me about his recent trip to Sydney for Rosemount Australian Fashion Week.

What were the highlights and lowlights of RAFW?

Highlights: seeing a collection as progressive as Gareth Pugh, but as clean as Prada from Dion Lee; going to a real life 40s style salon presentation at Jayson Brundson; the new social media running circles around the old schoolers in terms of speed, accessibility and all round coverage of RAFW; and of course meeting my new best good friend Steve Wood - photographer extraordinaire. Lowlights: Having a breakdown due to everything going wrong on the second day - internet went down, security were being big bums and no food all day all got a bit much.

Trend wise - what were the biggest and what were your personal favorites?

The Balmain shoulder - seen on almost all of the catwalks, all week I was shaking my head at the blatant copying going on, then I suddenly thought to myself - hey, somebody's gotta do it first - then other people start doing it, then it becomes a trend - and that's where we're at now. Harem pants for Africa, but my favourite pants were the cropped cigarette pants, the best of which were pleated. I love girls in pants.

What looks/trends do you think will translate best over here in little old NZ?

That's a hard one because the Sydney style is such a different one to what we wear here. Almost all the designers cater largely to PYTs - think bleach blonde, big boobs, see through skirts - cocktail frocks and the like, which is something very few NZ designers do. Sydney designers seem to be far more trend driven that NZ designers too - I think we're not quite so influenced by international trends down here, which has its positives and its negatives. Positives are that we're sometimes more original, negatives are that many of our designers put the same thing down the runway year in and out. It will be very interesting to see how many of the NZers get into the Balmain shoulder come NZFW.

Who was the best dressed person you saw?

My friend Nadia. I love how she dresses like a schoolboy/sailor boy, and everything she buys is like $3 from a thrift store. I never find anything at thrift stores! The standard of dress over in Sydney was really quite incredible - the magazine girls were wearing the most amazing clothes at 9am every morning, and lots of them got changed over the course of the day. Once again, I loved the girls in pants. So hot.

Speaking of which, is Scott Schuman sartorially exceptional in real life?

Scott Schuman is exceptionally small of stature in real life, I'd say he must only be about 5'4 or 5'5 at the most. He generally wears pretty standard American style stuff . That was the first photo taken of him at RAFW that I know about - I got him at about 8:45 am on the first day.

What were the most noticeable signs of the recession?

There weren't many that I could see, nobody talked about it too much, everyone was still wearing crazy expensive clothes and the catwalk shows were still pretty big events, so I don't think there were many at all. Maybe less international media than usual? Certainly less NZ media presence than normal.

What effect/influence do you you thing blogging and twitter has had on RAFW?

So much effect and so so much influence! After the first day of what we were doing - live video interviews, twit pics while catwalk shows were taking place, videos of the shows and backstage photos up within 15 minutes of them finishing - a lot of the traditional media started getting pretty snarky towards us, and most of our traffic levels doubled and even tripled. I think this was the first ever fashion week to be Twittered and Blogged on such a massively quick scale like what we did, and I think it's changed the nature of the game forever. At the same time, the traditional media still has its place - doing things so quickly means not being able to review collections with the same depth a newspaper or online magazine does. So I think we have our place, and they have theirs. But they didn't know what had hit them.

What's in your Fashion Week Survival tool kit?

Gum, Burt's Bees, laptop, camera, video camera, media pass. Water if I can get my hands on it.

Most “Ocker” fashion piece?

I don't know about ocker, but there was a hell of a lot of extreme Sydney pieces - entirely see through dresses worn with nothing underneath. Almost every designer did at least one of those. Oh, and bikinis. Those Australians don't know how to do a catwalk show without one.

Thanks Isaac! And thanks for the great (and tres speedy) coverage of RAFW.

RAFW: Camilla And Marc

The show from Camilla And Marc is def one of my faves so far. Gorgeous palette (and a constant favorite of mine) of creamy nudes, beiges and whites.
Love contrast between the silks, high sheens, and crochet, yet done in harmonious colours. That dress on the far left is gorgeous and I am so wanting the crochet cropped top on the far right.
The killer looks however were undoubtable the black/denim/gold babies. A comment on Isaac Likes said it looks like "Balmain meets Wang meets Ellery" and she is so right. There couldnt be a sicker collection lovechild. I would kill for every piece in these looks - super luxe gold + faded, soft, ragged denim = most beautiful, wearable contast.

Viva Le Males

The New Zealand Herald's Viva from yesterday (always the highlight of my midweek) was the best its been in ages! Dedicated to menswear - which I love, and wear.

V interesting piece on Stolen Girlfriends Club about their super successful branding and image.

"We did everything backwards, but I think we did the right thing about growing and establishing a brand, which is really hard these days," says Moore. "People don't realise that if you don't have a brand, you don't have anything. We stumbled across ours so to speak, but we did create a little bit of a following. People wanted to know what the name meant, what was behind it, it had this whole thing of mystery and interpretation as well and everyone kind of took ownership of it."

Their white safety pin dress from the current collection featured on FashionToast.com, where blogger Rumi Neely declared them her "new favourite label". That's kind of a big deal when you realise that style websites and bloggers like Neely are quickly becoming just as, if not more, influential than mainstream fashion magazines.

And they have me v excited for the summer collection - two words: Robert Palmer! Robert Palmer!
we wanna do something different and surprise people'," says Moore. "The new summer collection is heaps more modern, with bolder colours and detailing, a touch more sophisticated. Think Robert Palmer videos."

They also had an article by Isaac Hinden Miller on his insanely admirable (and rewarding) efforts at Paris Mens Fashion Week. The dude seriously gets an A++ for effort and tenacity.

Economy: RIP Runway Reporter

Another "Oh no.." post..
Runway Reporter website is being shut down in the next couple of weeks. ACP media are shutting down a lot of their websites (Cleo, Metro - which i love!) and there are going to be big redundancies.
Isaac Likes and Frockwriter are both definitely worth checking out in regards to this.

Little Brother Hearts Barkers

I'd been sad about the news that Little Brother was closing up shop.. But it turns out that all is not lost.

I was chatting to the manager of my local Barkers (when I got my little paws on that skull tee)and we were having a rant about the economy and retail etc and after I mentioned the Little Brother news he was saying that Little Brother was instead going to be selling through Barkers (as well as their affiliation with the amazing Des Rusk). Its definitely a win win situation - Little Brother gets way more exposure (all the Barkers stores as opposed to the three LB stores) and barkers ups their sartorial ante even further. I cant wait to start buying LB@B (for moi of course - mens shirts are the only type I wear). The new collection will be in store in April, and Barkers is going to open up in High Street (I will still be loyal to my local mall version - ah the joy of working in retail).

Isaac Likes has a great interview with Murray Crane from Little Brother.

Ps: I heart menswear.
