Karen Walker Eyewear: Fall 09

The new Karen Walker Eyewear collection for Fall 09 has just come out and is up on their website - but a few days ago I found (and fell in love with) this pair in tortoiseshell in a shop in Ponsonby...

... I love the retro quality, and the metal details - I'm somewhat over all the big heavy frames (lately I've been thrashing my faux-clubmasters - so much so that I think I'll invest in a real pair). They just seem a bit more interesting and refined.

The rest of the eyewear is great too - lots of black, tortoiseshell and metal details (veering away somewhat from the candy brights of the past few collections. And I love the use of the vampire teeth in the shots!

Twisted

I just found this gorgeous cropped tank top on Maximilia. It's by Australian designer Karla Spetic - someone I hadn't actually heard of before. I love the cropped cut and the twist detail - particularly how it affects the neckline. I also adore the neutral palette, so clean and refined - it really allows the details to shine.

NYFW FALL 09: Proenza Schouler & Narciso Rodgriguez

Love the evening wear shown for fall at Proenza Schouler; skinny velvet pants and metallic tops, and asymmetric velvet dresses with sheer skirts - refreshing ideas for nights out!

And I'm not usually a dress girl - but love these from the Narciso Rodriguez collection, especially the really different third one. Black high shine leather + candy pink skirt + nurse/ballerina white tights? Somehow it works!

Our girl Erin Wasson showed her Fall 09 line for RVCA; 

The girl herself lookd fab - love the slick, tight black dress and ton of bangles.. And leopard print booties...

The line has some gorgeous fringed silk shirts, sheer black mesh, denim and leather... 

 

Love details like the buckled ankle boots, the black fleece lined denim shorts, and the suspenders and thigh highs over sheer tights...

NYFW FALL 09: Phi & Doo.Ri

As you all know by now, I definitely have a thing (fetish? obsession?) for black leather - so I understandably die for what Phi did with it in it's Fall 09 collection. Amazing use of texture and linear elements (and zips! More zips!). I think the sheen of leather is always amazingly complemented by the rich, deep colour of velvet - and also the softness and luxury of fur. These looks are perfect examples of how all black outfits can be so interesting.

Similarly, I am also a total magpie. Love these molten dresses and star sprinkled lace tights from the Doo.Ri collection. Dark yet glittery and metallic - and definitely not your typical sparkly, girly dresses. Also love the middle look with its fur, beading and sheerness. And the makeup and hair of this show was standout for me - soft loose ponytail, boyish side part, fair (washed out even) skin and dark lips.

NYFW FALL 09: Rodarte

Rodarte's Fall 09 collection blew my mind - as always. They consistently manage to come up with something totally new and left of field every time - while still nodding to some of the strongest trends (sheer, asymmetry, leather). Their dresses look like handmade paper - the collection has an organic yet futuristic feel. The layered patterns and textures create such a deep, interesting look - without being busy are OTT.

 

I always love to see the close up shots, as they are where the collection does shine. I particularly love the marble fabric of the third shot.

And as always with Rodarte, the shoes are INSANE and so perfect.

NYFW FALL 09: Max Azria & Derek Lam

Max Azria showed the holy trinity of lack lace, velvet, leather - making them look fresh (but very dark) and new.

Love Derek Lam's use of gold, leather and fur for his collection - and the neutral creamy palette. Beige fur and white pants are a fresh, nice look for winter!

Bookworm: Sasha and Prada AND Karl

Exciting news on the art and book front...

... Sasha Pivovarova is already collaborating on a book for Prada - and now is doing one with Karl Lagerfeld too!

"Karl asked me to collaborate on a book based on Russian fairy tales!  I finally picked The Snow Maiden or Snegurochka.  It's a story of a gorgeous snow princess and her adventures towards a satisying, romantic, climax.  Karl didn't give a deadline, but I planned to do 12 illustrations and I've already done five!" 

NYFW FALL 09: William Rast & Temperley

As usual I loved the William Rast collection, the concepts follow on nicely from the Spring 09 collection - palette of denim, black and grey, american flag imagery. Fashionista tells us Carine AND Anna were both there - major kudos for J.T! The collection is apparently inspired by Thelma And Louise. I love the use of lace (the third look reminds me of my new Ksubi lace jeans).  I particularly adore the first look - the grey and leather jacket, and the skinny black pants with zip details.

 They use of studs again works really well - especially the asymmetry of the first jacket, and the subtle sleeves of the third. Love the dark (but not black), slim yet grungy aesthetic of the third look. And love Flavia.

I am also impressed with Temperley's collection. It does the holy trinity of leather, lace and zips in a mature, refined way - while still being totally hot and badass. Love the repetition of the vertical zip lines, and the high necklines in lace. These looks are just begging to be unzipped and peeled off.

NYFW FALL 09: Herve Leger & Preen

The Herve Leger by Max Azria collection used the most amazing bronzes and golds - from the dresses, to the makeup, right up to the catwalk. Creating a decadent yet earthy feel. The use of texture and asymmetry is also gorgeous.

I really love this cut out trend we are seeing - very different and very graphic. Its best when executed in black and white. Preen's collection featured a lot of it, and the whole collection was really impressive.

Russh January 09

My scanner has finally decided to start working - I sweat it's possessed (it refuses to scan anything from one particular issue of French Vogue.) I love this new Russh (not so new, a month old and well read by now).

 The shoots are mind blowing - as always. Love the beige blazers, torn jeans, pink cutoffs and Chanel in "Just Starting Over"...

And Tallulah is gorgeous as always in "Home Girl". Love the cutout black (really strong trend that we have been seeing in New York for Fall 09)...

"Wild" is gorgeous - such natural beauty, and love the delicate flowers and messy hair.

NYFW FALL 09: Alexander Wang, Karen Walker, Threeasfour

As usual, our boy Alexander Wang failed to disappoint. In his own words, his badass little rebel girl is growing up - this means a collection full of slick shapes, sharp tailoring, and hard black.

I love the black looks he showed and the variety of textures...

And his sparing use of white really pops - like the fur trimmed leather jacket, and the sheer asymmetrical  dress...
One of my favorite aspects of his collection is the cutouts and asymmetry - so linear and futuristic..

I was a bit underwhelmed with the overall look of Karen Walker's new collection, but some looks did stand out - mainly the jackets; lambskin trimmed, washed leather, and classic tan coats. But as this collection will be our spring one, I'm not sure how that will translate for me.

Threeasfour's collection was really intriguing - inspired by crystals. I love their use of shape, transparency and embellishment.

NYFW FALL 09: Ohne Titel, Hutson, Rag & Bone

The Fall collections at New York Fashion Week are starting to pick up! I love the sheer black layering, cutouts, and high leather boots at Ohne Titel...

... And the long fur coat (very Margot Tenenbaum) at Hutson. On my wish list for winter is definitely a boxy, masculine jacket like this one at Rag & Bone..
