Musing: Olsens, Erin, Wang, Chung

Opening Ceremony's Japan opening party brought out some of my alltime style faves. The Olsen's absolutely made my day by wearing matching shades and bunny ears. They remind us that fashion is best when one has fun with it - you can be humorous and ironic, yet not take yourself too seriously. I'm also seriously coveting Erin's shorts.

Alexa's also been looking v cute lately - the girl does a tee + a-line skirt combo like know one else. God I wish I suited those sorts of outfits. That first image alone has amped up my loafer-desire even more, and now I'm wanting to pair them with spotty sheer tights. Oh dear.
The girl's also got killer festival fashion; aforementioned spotty pantyhose, perfect grandpa-like cardy/shirt combo, ace leather shorts - and that tricked out fedora has got me wanting to DIY my own.

Cathy Horyn & The Olsens

I've been so looking forward to reading Cathy Horyn's much anticipated interview the The Olsens' about their line The Row. And it does not disappoint - revealing, mature, measure. And most surprisingly, the notoriously hard to please Horyn seems genuinely impressed.

Very few celebrities are either so fascinating or appalling that they manage to get under our skins, as Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen have, and it may be because they are twins. Yet their success in a field as competitive as fashion is impossible to deny...

“I think the way to think about The Row is that it offers the perfect blank — the perfect schoolboy blazer, the perfect leather leggings, the perfect peacoat. So many designers are intent on the next great trend that some of the basics are neglected.”...

Mary-Kate added, “Also, I think you design things because maybe it’s not you.” She paused. “I have my own pet peeves about things that I don’t wear.”

Like what?

Ashley started to laugh.

“Like tank tops,” Mary-Kate said.

“You’ll never see her in a tank top,” Ashley said...

“I think Ashley has an old soul,” said Ms. Siskin, their partner in Elizabeth and James. “That’s really what it is. She’s not as good with the whole celebrity thing as people might think. She’s longs for a bit of a normal life.”

“Our lives have been kind of backward. We never got that opportunity in high school to figure out what you want to do. We never had the time to discover, ‘Oh, I love doing this ...’ So for us this experience in fashion has been amazing.”

Thursday Muses

Boy have our girls been laying low lately. But when they venture out in the public arena they remind us why they are total style icons.

I totally love that they dressed complimentary again. I secretly adore it when best friends and sisters dress matchy; it conveys solidarity, friendship, exclusivity and the power over being a pair.

I also love the end of the week as there is usually a ton of new Alexa outfits from her show. These are great examples of why navy rules. Softer than black, carries a print or logo awesomely and is just a little bit old fashioned - navy is, after all, the quintessential nanna hue.
And although I'm not a skirt girl, the few times I do it's always itsybitsy and covered with a baggy tee.

Oh and I've been secretly contemplating purchasing a pair of roman sandals... And this has cemented the decision.

I've been desperate for a matelot striped top for what seems like forever, so I'm tres jealous of the stunning Alexandra Spencer of 4th And Bleeker who has the perfect one, and pvc pants, AND is in Paris. Ah merde. Le sigh.

5018

I still think Chanel's Half Tint 5018 sunglasses from Spring 07 are one of my favorite pairs of all time. They pretty much stop you in your tracks. Bold, graphic and modern they are also chic and classic.

And they also happened to be worn repeatedly by two of my favorite girls - Mary Kate and Nicole. Also featuring in the ever inspiring video from The Row.

Alexa On Style

"I'm obsessed with nautical things and it has gold buttons with anchors on. It makes me feel a bit like a sailor, or a public schoolboy, which is my favourite look in the whole world."

"I prefer it when I look like a boy to when I have to dress up like a girl."

"I'm kind of obsessed with the Olsen twins. I find them amazing because they look like little well-dressed animals."

"And I don't like T-shirts that are cut for girls."

17/06/09: Vogue Russia

I'm not usually a fan of Snejana Onopka, but this I like! Messy hair, strong brows and some sick jackets. And I still want round Lennon/Olsen glasses.

Hair Ramble #2

God I have been tearing my hair out all day trying to upload the images for this post. Finally figured it was the colour profiles from Photoshop causing drrrama. And of course technical issues are great distractions from uni work.

So speaking of hair, I had a ramble the other day about the half (or more? maybe?) of me that is dying to lop of my hair into a scruffy bob. The rest of my is desperate for it to grow grow grow. Do I keep growing it? Am tempted to dye it darkblonde/lightbrown - am pretty much obsessed with this hair colour. Think young Brooke Shields circa Blue Lagoon and those Calvin Klein ads.

But am I ready to not be blonde? Have been for my WHOLE life. There is something heavenly about long, messy blonde locks. Typical of the iconic Chloe girls (as well as Chloe Sevigny).
Or should I maintain what I have at the moment? Midlength, growing out, wavy/disheveled - but occasionally bordering on scarecrow when I am v lazy.
Wow this post has been the ultimate in distraction. And sleep calls, 5 hours before wakeup and deadlines tomorrow. But only two sleeps until my five week mid semester break!! Hallelujah!

The Met's Costume Institute Gala 09: The Olsens

The Olsen girls looked stunning at The Mets Costume Institute Gala themed "Model as Muse: Embodying Fashion"" this year. I love how the total go against the typical "sexy" look (just compare them to what Giselle wore). Mary Kate was in Christian Lacroix Couture and Ashley wore The Row. Her new haircut is growing on me - its sharp and modern (but a little bit 90s, in a good way). Mary Kate's is looking awesome too - soft and natural, but not messy or overly disheveled like it was for a while there.

Two Wheelers

God I wish Auckland was flatter... So jealous of everyone overseas looking super chilled on their bikes. And Mary Kate's has a basket! Classic. Love the jewelry combo and the big navy smock dress.

26/04/09: Mary Kate

The girl can do no wrong in my books.  Love the loose floaty - lovely faded, aged look to the fabric. Im still seriously coveting a pair of Lennon glasses, and a perfect satchel. And even though these are just pap-snaps, the colours in the whole shots are gorgeous; brickwork, lighting etc.

26/04/09: Style.com's Party Pics

The shots from Chloe's Melrose Place store opening party are some of the best Party Style shots I've seen in a long time. Hosted by two of my faves - Chloe Sevigny and Kate Bosworth. Both looked stunning. Love that The Boz's stunning skirt from the Fall collection was teamed with a top from pre-fall. And Im still coveting that scalloped white blazer.
And love the looks an Angela Lindvall and Mary Kate at Chanel's Tribeca Film Festival dinner.

Do We Dare? Tied Shirts

Believe it or not, I'm really loving the look of tied shirts at the moment - I was fully working this trend way back when I was eight. Don't know if thats a good sign or bad - but then I've been wearing bike shorts, baggy tees and chucks again too. But will people "get it" or just think you are totally daggy (god havnt used that word since I was... Eight actually!).

MK

Oh wow. This has to be one the best bags ever. And I so need to get real Rayban Clubmasters (wear my seedy copies enough to justify real ones).

Nostalgic Muse: Janis Joplin

Sorry for the lack of posts, has been a crazy few days!!! Thought I'd do a post on one of my favorite nostalgic muses, they fabulously disheveled Janis Joplin. Her messy straggly, big round glasses and witchy grin top of her perfect hippy/gypsy style. Its evident everywhere at the moment, but done best by Mary Kate and Erin, and at Gucci.

New Look MK

I really wasn't sure how I felt about the beauty look Mary Kate wore to the Met's 125th Anniversary Gala - but upon looking at it several more times, I really do like it!
The hair has an old hollywood feel, but is still a bit disheveled (classic MK) and I love the side part. They red lip is darker than most do, and looks better for it - especially paired with fair skin and smoky bronze eyes. Will def be having a go at this look for a  night out soon!

I Have Missed You

She has been laying low for a while, but now our girl Mary Kate has shown up everywhere looking insanely stunning.

This black dress at the Independent Spirit awards is so chic.

And this white blazer (Stella McCartney? Probz!) has been one of her key pieces this past week. Love the monochromatic outfit below - and how refreshing a white jacket is for winter. And the sunglasses (they remind me of the Karen Walker ones I have been going on about.)

She also wore it really well with blue and the same scarf - and Nicole!
Ps: How amazing is the cut of her shoes?
MKs accessorizing lately has just blown me away. Love the tons of bi-tone jewelry.

And finally, here are some shots from Fashion Magazine (Canada)
