More Classics

Black, white, denim and grey are always timeless. As is the subtle balance of classic pieces from the masculine and feminine ends of the spectrum. My favorite looks generally boil down to several masculine elements like a big slouchy jumper, a perfect coat; combined with a piece that is a bit girly and innocent (although not at all saccharine) like a denim a-line skirt - or polka dots!! Topped off with some blatant sexy-clunky heels - the best kind there is.

22/08/09 Daily Alexa Fix

I've been feeling the urge to attempt dresses more, and Alexa has, as usual, provided. I love the bright red - and that its short but long sleeved and high necked (we all know what short red dresses can sometimes look like). The statement necklaces pop amazingly.

Even more than the red, I LOVE the dress she wore to the premiere of The September Issue - that she described as "victorian undergarments" (the dress, not the film  - obvz). I love the dirty cream - like its been worn one too many times. The prim neckline and endearingly awkward length are foiled by the sheerness of the bodice.

I'm really coveting a dress or skirt that length, and I find they actually suit me better than knee length. There's something youthful and innocent yet nostalgically prim and nana-ish about it. My favorite executions of it have been from Burberry, Karen Walker and Juliette Hogan.

There's something comforting, especially in winter, about rugging up in classic black, grey and white - pretty foolproof, yet still eye catching and stylish. I think it works best with a textured piece or two - particularly the luxury (and warmth!) of velvet.

Breton

I feel like I have been hunting for the perfect Breton top for forever. Matelot (nautical) stripes in cream and navy are so classic - yet not boring as some "classic pieces" are. They manage to be preppy yet casual, chicly feminine yet boyish. And deliciously French - epitomised by Francoise Hardy, Jane Birkin and Audrey Tatou in Coco Avant Chanel. The breton is also a typical Alexa Chung look - really love the red version she wore recently on her MTV show, is a fresh take on the classic look.

I am particularly lusting after the ones from Burberry's and A.P.C (center and right) and closer to home To Sir With Love's unbelievably soft cashmere sweater. I love the ones where the stripes start from the upper chest - breaks up the intensity a bit.

Resort 2010: Burberry Prorsum

Every season I love Burberry a little bit more - especially the softer, earthier silhouette and fabrics that Bailey has been doing the past few seasons. These looks from the Resort collection are outstanding. Amazing, all white outfits that don't look prissy, high maintenance or clinical. Quite the opposite. The jackets are amazing as well. Don't even get me started on the gorgeous socks/heels combo - I'm pretty much obsessed with socks at the mo - have been wearing them with everything.. Much to my little sisters dismay.

I love a skinny legging (still needing to get my little hands on some Black Rats) but they have to be paired with an oversized top. This drapey, cropped sleeve cashmere cardie would be perfect layered over a soft loose tank. Ironically flashy gold accessories would be perfect to kill any potential boringness created by a monochrome look.

13/05/09: Booties

I think it's time for some blatant shoe porn. I've been obsessed with platform booties for forever now (am STILL searching for a pair of wedge ankle boots a la Sam Edelman - haven't come close unfortunately). But these all are super hot - if so far out of my financial stratosphere it's not even funny. But thats the point of shoe porn.

Accessory Love: Burberry, Missoni & Marc by Marc Jacobs

Seriously loving the accessories from the Fall 09 collections. Burberry did some amazing black booties - check out the soles. Intense.

And I die for one of the furry bags at Missoni - love the juxtaposition between the luxurious, soft fur and the cold smooth gold.
The shoes (but they are so much more) shown at Marc by Marc Jacobs were too cute. Do we think the fur booties are wearable? Not that it matters, I'd wear them regardless. The hiking boots and socks are also v cute, and remind me of the classic skating boot that Jacobs did for Fall 07 Marc by Marc.

MFW: Missoni & Burberry

MISSONI

The layers and shapes of colours and textures in the Fall 09 collection that Missoni showed in Milan are amazing. Greys, blues, beiges and soft browns - who knew they could all be put together so well? I love the layers and layers of knits; draped, folded, peeking out from under eachother. And love the slouchy, semi-sheer leggings.

BURBERRY

Burberry also really impressed me with their collection (I wasn't that sold on their Spring 09). Christopher Bailey played with a tried and true classic British theme - the Bloomsbury group (notably the classic looks of Virginia Wolf and Vanessa Bell) - and it worked really well. Soft, slouchy layers; floaty white dresses (in the increasingly popular calf length). I love how they are all paired with grey tights and black shoes. And am lusting after that first coat. Perfect.

It's getting sooo close. We bought our tree on the weekend! Its lovely and full and lush (not mangy like some previous years). We've been threading popcorn onto string for the tree, and going through the decorations. I bought some gorgeous new decorations, very fine wooden cut outs of snowflakes - really delicate and have a real natural, earthy quality. Will post tree photos when its all done!

Hows everyones christmas shopping going? I'm (miraculously) all done (bar one present). Feels v good to have it all out of the way. And I can't wait to give all my gifts out. Yay also to mama paying off my Karen Walker dress that I had on layby (she paid off the remainder for christmas - I can't wait to open it on the 25th!
